Youth mental health is in crisis. Dance is part of the answer.

Diagnosed mental or behavioral health conditions among 12–17 year-olds increased 35% between 2016 and 2023, driven by a 61% rise in anxiety diagnoses and a 45% rise in depression. Community-based activities that combine physical movement, creative expression, and social connection represent one of the most promising responses available to families — and our research shows that structured dance education is consistently associated with meaningful mood improvement.

Research note: This study identifies a consistent association between dance classes and mood improvement — not a guaranteed outcome for every child on every day. Science is honest like that, and so are we.

Invented & Exclusive

Dance Positive™ was invented by Tiffany and Paul Henderson.
No other dance studio in the world has it.

Tiffany built Dance Positive during her Master of Applied Positive Psychology studies at the University of Pennsylvania — combining Tiffany's 25+ years of dance education with Paul's background in data science and technology. The platform is proprietary to Tiffany's Dance Academy and its licensed franchise partners. No competitor, no franchise group, and no other studio has access to this technology or the research it powers.

Finally — data that shows what you've always suspected.

Dance Positive is a proprietary platform built by Tiffany Henderson (MAPP, University of Pennsylvania) that gives every TDA family a real-time window into their child's emotional growth. Your dancer's mood is measured before and after every class — achievements, skill progression, and long-term wellbeing trends tracked automatically. Completely free for all enrolled families.

TDA's primary research partnership is with the University of Pennsylvania. A new Stanford University collaboration on executive function research is currently underway.

Four steps to seeing your child's growth.

Dance Positive integrates seamlessly into your child's existing dance classes. Your dancer simply keeps dancing. No apps, no phones, no interruptions — and none of the data is ever used in a way that affects your child's class experience or standing.

🤍
No Lab Coats. No Clipboards. No Disruption.
Your child just dances. Instructors handle a quick emoji tap at the start and end of class. That's the entire "research" experience for your dancer. Everything else happens in the background, quietly and securely.
1
In-Class Mood Tracking
At the start and end of each class, your dancer privately taps a mood emoji on the instructor's tablet. No phones, no disruption — the whole process takes under a minute.
2
Earn Points & Badges
Students automatically earn points for attendance, participation, and skill milestones. Recognition appears instantly in family and student portals — reinforcing effort and growth, not competition.
3
Optional Wellbeing Check-In
Families who choose to participate in the full research study receive a brief, age-appropriate wellbeing check-in at home every three months — just a few simple questions about how your child is feeling. Takes 5–10 minutes, and it's completely optional.
4
Your Family Portal
Your secure parent dashboard shows your child's mood trends, skill mastery, achievement badges, and long-term emotional development data. Already active — no setup needed.

University of Pennsylvania research standards — applied to every class.

This isn't a wellness app. Dance Positive is a longitudinal research study conducted with full ethical oversight from the University of Pennsylvania — meaning independent university experts have reviewed and approved every aspect of how your child's data is used and protected. A parallel study with Stanford University is currently in review. The completed capstone study — now in peer review at Frontiers in Psychology: Performance Science — examined 256 children and adolescents across four studio locations over four months, collecting 4,224 paired mood measurements.

Motivation science, not sticker charts.

The Dance Positive achievement system is built on three decades of psychological research — not guesswork. Every point, badge, and milestone is designed to build intrinsic love of learning rather than external reward-seeking.

Werbach Gamification Framework

Built using Prof. Kevin Werbach's Six-D Framework from UPenn's Wharton School. The same principles that have trained 500,000+ students worldwide.

Deci & Ryan · 1985

Self-Determination Theory

Points satisfy three core psychological needs: autonomy (students choose engagement level), competence (clear skill markers), and relatedness (community recognition).

Dweck · 2006

Growth Mindset Design

Achievement rewards practice and persistence over talent. Advanced skill badges encourage challenge-seeking. Recognition for resilience and comeback efforts.

4 Portals

Family, Student, Studio & Research

Four dedicated portals give parents, dancers, studio staff, and researchers the exact data they need — with privacy controls and IRB-compliant data governance.

"For the first time, I can see how dance might help my daughter avoid anxiety from too much screen-time. Seeing her skill progression and points increase week after week gives me confidence that dance class is exactly what she needs to protect her mental health."
